Batelco by Beyon and Nokia have signed an agreement to implement Bahrain’s first private 5G network dedicated to industrial applications at Alba, the world’s largest single-site aluminium smelter. This advanced network is expected to enhance Alba’s ongoing digital transformation, improving operational efficiency, fostering innovation, and increasing safety in the manufacturing sector.

The formal agreement was signed at Alba’s headquarters in Askar, with Batelco’s chief executive Maitham Abdulla and Alba’s chief executive Ali Al Baqali present, along with key executives from both organizations. This partnership aims to deploy a customized private 5G network that will significantly enhance Alba’s operational performance by facilitating artificial intelligence (AI)-powered predictive maintenance, autonomous systems, and comprehensive real-time monitoring capabilities.

The private 5G network will provide several advantages for Alba, including ultra-low latency connectivity that enables real-time decision-making and precise control of industrial processes. Built-in security features will protect sensitive data in this high-risk environment, while Internet of Things (IoT) safety devices will allow for real-time tracking of hazardous conditions, thus improving worker safety. The network is also designed to integrate Industrial IoT and smart machinery, which will optimize workflows, reduce downtime, and maximize overall productivity.

Mr. Abdulla emphasized that this deployment is transformative for Bahrain’s industrial sector, stating that the partnership with Nokia brings essential private 5G capabilities to Alba. He highlighted that this project represents a strategic foundation for Alba’s growth and ambitions in digital transformation.

Mahmoud El Banna, head of Enterprise Campus Edge Sales at Nokia for the Middle East and Africa, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration with Batelco, noting that this deployment will enable Alba to fully embrace Industry 4.0 applications and unlock the benefits of digitalization and automation.

Mr. Al Baqali shared his vision for the project, calling the deployment of the private 5G network a significant milestone in Alba’s digital transformation journey. He outlined the objectives of leveraging this advanced connectivity to revolutionize operations, enhance safety protocols, and drive sustainable growth, aiming to maintain Alba’s position as a leader in the global aluminium industry.
