Dubai is preparing to be the first city in the world to launch an aerial taxi project, with services anticipated to begin in the first quarter of 2026. Visitors can now see a prototype of the flying taxi, developed by Joby Aviation, on display at the Museum of the Future. This initiative marks a significant step towards redefining urban mobility in the city.

Khaled Al Awadhi, director of Transportation Systems at the Roads and Transport Authority’s (RTA) Public Transport Agency, emphasized the aerial taxi’s unique features. He noted that the vehicle’s vertical take-off and landing capabilities meet the highest standards of safety and security, ensuring passenger well-being.
The Joby S4 aerial taxi is an eco-friendly mode of transport powered entirely by electricity. This zero-emission vehicle is designed to be quieter than traditional helicopters, featuring six rotors, four battery packs, and the capacity to carry four passengers along with a pilot. It boasts a range of up to 161 kilometers and can reach a maximum speed of 322 kilometers per hour.
Initial routes for the flying taxis will connect major Dubai landmarks, including Dubai International Airport, Downtown Dubai, Dubai Marina, and Palm Jumeirah. For example, a trip from the airport to Palm Jumeirah would take just 12 minutes compared to 45 minutes by car, showcasing the efficiency of this new travel option. The service aims to integrate seamlessly with existing public transport systems and individual mobility solutions, such as e-scooters and bicycles.
Recently, the UAE announced its first commercial vertiport for flying taxis, named Dubai International Vertiport (DXV). This facility will have an annual capacity of 42,000 landings for aerial taxis and is designed to serve approximately 170,000 passengers. Joby Aviation will manage the vehicle operations and passenger logistics, while Skyports Infrastructure is responsible for the design, construction, and operation of the vertiport.
Speaking to WAM, Anthony Khoury, UAE General Manager of Joby, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, “We plan to deliver an incredible experience for residents and visitors to Dubai, and we’re excited to invite people into the conversation about what the future of clean, quiet and efficient air travel will look like when we launch our service.”
