As reported by WAM, a major highlight of the conference’s opening day was the launch of the UAE’s first initiative of its kind, ESTBEC (Epidemiology Study Before Eye Complications). The programme aims to improve patient care, support early detection, and map the prevalence of eye diseases across the country. The initiative was introduced as part of a strategic collaboration between ESO and Théa Pharma.

Sheikha Dr. Noura Al Qassimi called ESTBEC a significant step forward in ophthalmic research, highlighting its focus on early detection and better management of eye conditions. Carol El Ajouz, General Manager of Théa Pharma Middle East, stressed that the programme aligns with the UAE’s Vision 2030 goals by identifying trends in eye diseases and improving early diagnosis.

The initiative also includes screening efforts for conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, keratoconus, and age-related macular degeneration. Experts like Dr. Omnia Hamam and Dr. Mona Marwan described ESTBEC as a milestone for early detection and enhanced care in the region.

ESO 2025 will continue with discussions and projects led by top ophthalmologists and researchers, aiming to shape the future of eye care in the UAE.
