ADGM Employers to Hire Remote Workers from April with New Law

Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) firms will be allowed to hire remote workers starting April 1 under new employment regulations issued by the ADGM Registration Authority (RA). The updated rules aim to provide clearer guidelines for employers and employees, focusing on flexibility and adaptability in the workplace.

The new regulations expand the definition of an employee to include remote and part-time workers. Remote employees can work from anywhere—inside or outside the UAE—without being physically present at the ADGM office. Employers are required to specify remote work in the employment contract and provide necessary technical equipment for the job.

Companies will also continue to handle work permits, residency visas, and ID cards for their employees, including remote workers. For part-time employees, contracts will involve fewer working hours—less than eight per day or five days a week—depending on the employer’s standard practices.

Speaking to Khaleej Times, Hamad Sayah Al Mazrouei, CEO of the ADGM Registration Authority, explained that the new rules reflect global changes in workplace trends and are designed to support innovation while protecting both employers and staff.

The updated laws also address other important employment matters. For instance, probation periods are capped at six months, during which employees are entitled to leaves and sick days but are not eligible for sick pay. Employment contracts can be terminated during probation with a week’s notice.

Additionally, the regulations strengthen anti-discrimination measures. Employers are prohibited from discriminating against employees based on sex, religion, nationality, age, marital status, disability, or other factors. Retaliation against employees for filing complaints about workplace discrimination is also forbidden.

These changes mark a significant step toward modernizing employment practices in Abu Dhabi, offering businesses and workers more flexible and inclusive options.
