Abu Dhabi has launched driverless rides in designated areas, including routes to and from Zayed International Airport. The transport authority, Abu Dhabi Mobility, is expanding its autonomous vehicle services after successfully completing 30,000 trips, which covered over 430,000 kilometers.

Users of TXAI or Uber can conveniently book their driverless trips to and from Zayed International Airport through their mobile applications. The first two phases of the autonomous vehicle operations were conducted in the Yas and Saadiyat Islands, and the transport department is now extending these services to the access roads leading to the airport.

This expansion aligns with Abu Dhabi’s goal of developing a smart transport sector by integrating advanced technologies into sustainable mobility. Abu Dhabi Mobility is collaborating with Space 42 and Uber for the operation of these autonomous taxis and plans to gradually expand the service across the city.

Through its initiative to enhance the autonomous mobility sector, Abu Dhabi Mobility aims to achieve significant targets by 2040. These objectives include increasing the percentage of trips using autonomous vehicles to 25% of total trips in the emirate, reducing carbon emissions by 15%, and decreasing road accidents by 18%.

Dr. Abdulla Al Ghafli, acting director-general of the Integrated Transport Centre, emphasized that this expansion is a strategic move towards developing Abu Dhabi’s smart transport ecosystem. He noted that the authorities are committed to enhancing the digital and regulatory infrastructure to ensure the seamless integration of autonomous vehicles while maintaining high safety and efficiency standards.

Abu Dhabi Mobility is rigorously testing these autonomous vehicles to ensure compliance with traffic laws and regulations. Since the launch of these services, there have been no recorded incidents, highlighting the safety of these vehicles in urban transport.

Furthermore, Abu Dhabi Mobility is dedicated to raising public awareness of these services and fostering their adoption. The initiative reinforces the emirate’s goal of becoming a global hub for innovation in smart mobility and leading the adoption of autonomous transport solutions in accordance with international best practices.
