Abu Dhabi to Establish Vertiports for Flying Taxis

Abu Dhabi is making significant strides in air transport innovation with plans to construct vertiports at three key locations: Yas Island, Khalifa Port, and Al Bateen. This announcement follows the successful vertical take-off and landing conducted at the Yas Marina Circuit last summer, marking a pivotal moment for the UAE’s pioneering efforts in flying taxi technology.

The announcement was made by LODD, a company based in Abu Dhabi that specializes in AI-powered drone technology. They noted that the three chosen locations were carefully selected after assessing over ten different potential sites. These new vertiports are set to support flying taxis, which could begin operations as early as next year, facilitating both passenger and logistical services and connecting critical areas within Abu Dhabi while also potentially linking to other locations throughout the UAE.

Previous trials have demonstrated the capabilities of drones in this initiative. A smaller drone can transport two passengers up to 35 kilometers, while larger models can accommodate up to five passengers over distances of 250 kilometers, carrying loads of up to 350 kilograms and reaching speeds of approximately 185 kilometers per hour. Future ambitions include the local production of drone components like motors and batteries, with plans to develop these materials within the UAE for global export.
