Bain Capital Launches hscale for Data Centre Expansion in EMEA

Bain Capital has introduced hscale, a dedicated hyperscale data centre platform aimed at expanding its footprint in the EMEA region. This launch is a key part of Bain Capital’s broader digital strategy, which commenced with the acquisition of AQ Compute in October 2024.

The leadership team of hscale has a proven track record, having delivered nearly 7 gigawatts of data centre capacity across the EMEA and APAC regions. The platform is designed to address the growing demand from hyperscalers, which has been significantly driven by the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing.

CEO Oliver Schiebel, previously the head of Mainova WebHouse, leads this initiative. He is supported by a team of industry experts with extensive operational and technical knowledge. The company aims to position itself as a customer-focused provider of scalable infrastructure that meets the evolving needs of hyperscale clients. Schiebel stated, “Our vision with hscale is to build the fastest route to market for hyperscalers — combining cleaner energy, high-capacity infrastructure and outstanding service.”

Aquila Group, which sold AQ Compute to Bain Capital last year, retains a 20 per cent stake in hscale. The sustainable asset management firm, along with its subsidiary Aquila Clean Energy, will offer vital low-carbon and renewable energy expertise to support hscale’s environmental, social, and governance (ESG) commitments and long-term growth objectives.

Furthermore, Aquila is set to provide additional capital investment to strengthen its confidence in hscale’s future. Bain Capital’s principal, Michael Huber, confirmed plans for a multi-billion Euro investment in the coming years, which will support an ambitious pipeline of over 1 gigawatt of capacity in key European data centre hubs such as Frankfurt, London, Milan, Madrid, Oslo, Barcelona, and Zaragoza.

Currently, more than 100 megawatts are under construction, enabling hscale to offer immediate capacity for clients undergoing rapid digital transformations. The platform will officially launch at the Datacloud Global Congress in Cannes this June, where it will act as a Gold Sponsor. CTO Abed Jishi is scheduled to participate in a significant panel discussion on June 5th, where he will present the company’s strategic plans and technology roadmap.

As the demand for hyperscale solutions grows and sustainability becomes increasingly important, hscale is entering the market with a compelling offer: a purpose-built, AI-ready infrastructure platform that is backed by the substantial investment capabilities of Bain Capital and the sustainability expertise of Aquila Group.
