The project showcased Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) applications using Space42’s L band geostationary satellites, employing 3GPP-compliant release 17 technology. This alignment with global standards is essential for future scalability and paves the way for the upcoming launch of Thuraya Direct, a new messaging and IoT service expected to be commercially available in the fourth quarter of 2025.

Space42’s operating model emphasizes early alignment with transformative open-standard technologies, scaling them through targeted programs, and delivering outcomes via trusted partnerships. The initiative addresses crucial sectors such as energy, agriculture, and transportation, where reliable connectivity cannot rely solely on terrestrial infrastructure.

According to Ali Al Hashemi, CEO of Yahsat Space Services at Space42, this collaboration exemplifies the company’s strategy. He noted that it extends mobile connectivity boundaries by enabling standard smartphones and IoT devices to connect via satellite in areas lacking terrestrial networks. Al Hashemi emphasized the importance of engaging with telecom providers to meet immediate market needs and demonstrate the viability of this technology.

Thuraya has been at the forefront of satellite mobility for over two decades, providing resilient connectivity in challenging environments. As the mobile satellite wing of Space42, it continues to redefine satellite-enabled services. Gatehouse Satcom played a significant role by contributing essential expertise and software capabilities for 3GPP NTN, which facilitated the successful validation of messaging protocols over geostationary satellite links.

Jesper Noer, Vice President Commercial at Gatehouse Satcom, expressed pride in supporting Space42 in transitioning direct-to-device technology from concept to reality. He highlighted the challenges of running 5G NB-IoT over geostationary satellites, noting that their adaptable software is compliant with global standards and ready to foster the next wave of NTN innovation.

The collaboration has confirmed that 3GPP-compliant devices, including smartphones and IoT modules, can seamlessly connect to Space42’s satellite network. This validation indicates that Thuraya Direct can be delivered through globally standardized infrastructure, making it accessible to any telecom or OEM partner capable of interoperability. With commercial deployment targeted for the end of this year, Space42 is actively engaging with mobile operators and industry stakeholders to bring this service to market.
