The TradeTech Forum, held at the ADNEC Center in Abu Dhabi, serves as a significant platform for advancing digital trade systems globally. The event is jointly hosted by the UAE Ministry of Economy, the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development (ADDED), and the World Economic Forum. This year, the forum unites global leaders, technology innovators, and experts to explore how technology can reshape trade practices.

According to Economy Middle East, Tim Stekkinger, head of the TradeTech Initiative at the World Economic Forum, said that the forum facilitates a collaborative ecosystem among policymakers, tech innovators, and logistics operators. This collaboration is crucial for accelerating the digitalization of global trade. Businesses attending the forum are encouraged to form cross-border partnerships and directly engage with policymakers to design efficient and inclusive trade solutions.

The forum aims to foster significant technological and trade alliances. Stekkinger noted that there is an expectation for progress on cross-border data exchange agreements, particularly concerning digital trade documentation and the legal recognition of electronic records. He highlighted the potential for blockchain-based trade infrastructure and initiatives like TWIN, which aims to provide a shared digital layer for trade data exchange.

Furthermore, Stekkinger discussed the importance of scaling innovations that close financial gaps for SMEs. He mentioned the TradeTech Regulatory Sandbox, developed with UAE financial authorities, which provides a secure environment for fintechs and financial institutions to test innovative solutions. These solutions include stablecoin-based settlement mechanisms and tokenized trade assets, allowing for smarter regulation and increased confidence in new models.

In addition, technology’s role in humanitarian initiatives is becoming increasingly significant. Stekkinger pointed out that the humanitarian sector faces challenges due to limited donor funding. To address this, a global supply chain visibility tool is being developed in collaboration with humanitarian agencies. This tool aims to leverage real-time shipment data and AI-powered forecasting to improve resource allocation during crises.
