Abu Dhabi Mobility, an affiliate of the Department of Municipalities and Transport, has announced the completion of approximately 30,000 trips using autonomous vehicles in the emirate. These trips have covered a distance of over 430,000 kilometers, marking a significant achievement in the city’s smart mobility project.

Building on the success of the initial phases on Yas Island and Saadiyat Island, the autonomous vehicle services will now be expanded to include access roads to Zayed International Airport. This development is part of a broader plan to gradually roll out services across different areas of Abu Dhabi.
Dr. Abdulla Al Ghafli, Acting Director-General of the Integrated Transport Centre, emphasized that this expansion is a strategic move toward enhancing Abu Dhabi’s smart transport ecosystem. He noted that efforts are ongoing to improve the digital and regulatory infrastructure, ensuring the smooth integration of autonomous vehicles into the existing transport network while adhering to the highest safety and efficiency standards.
Abu Dhabi Mobility is collaborating with “Space 42” and “Uber” to operate autonomous taxis within the city. The initiative aims to increase the use of autonomous vehicles to 25% of all trips in Abu Dhabi by 2040, reduce carbon emissions by 15%, and lower road accidents by 18%.
In addition to expanding the service, Abu Dhabi Mobility is focused on establishing a comprehensive regulatory framework for the autonomous vehicle sector. This includes developing specialized insurance models and enhancing digital infrastructure to secure communication networks against cyber threats.
Since the launch of autonomous vehicle services, there have been no recorded incidents, ensuring a high level of safety. Abu Dhabi Mobility is also actively testing these vehicles and overseeing operational processes to comply with traffic laws and regulations. The initiative represents a pioneering step in integrating AI into the transport network, enhancing operational efficiency, and reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s role as a global hub for smart mobility innovation.
