Vertical Aerospace, a UK-based company, is making strides in the development of its electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, the VX4. Designed to carry four passengers up to 100 miles at speeds of 150mph, the VX4 promises a quieter, greener alternative to helicopters for short-distance travel. With zero emissions and reduced travel times, the aircraft could transform regional transport.

Since its founding in 2016, the company has received 1,500 pre-orders for the VX4, valued at around $6 billion. Customers include major airlines like American Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, and Japan Airlines, as well as leasing companies such as Avolon.
The VX4 is being developed for regional flights, with potential uses like quick airport transfers. For example, a trip from Battersea to Heathrow could take just 12 minutes compared to nearly an hour by car.
While Vertical Aerospace has achieved key milestones, including its first piloted powered flight manoeuvres, challenges remain. Regulatory hurdles could delay certification, which was recently pushed from 2025 to 2026. The company also faces tough competition from US-based Joby and Archer, backed by major tech and industrial players.
Vertical’s strategy focuses on using proven technologies from partners like Rolls-Royce and Honeywell, while developing critical components like next-gen propellers and battery packs in-house. The company has also secured patents for innovations in flight control systems and aerodynamic design.
The VX4 is undergoing rigorous testing and certification to meet commercial airliner safety standards. After addressing issues from earlier prototypes, the aircraft is now better equipped to move forward in the certification process.
In December 2024, Vertical Aerospace secured crucial funding through an investment agreement with Mudrick Capital and its majority shareholder, Stephen Fitzpatrick. This followed a $50 million funding announcement in November, part of a broader $180 million financial plan to strengthen the company’s balance sheet.
Strategic partnerships with industry leaders such as Jaguar Land Rover, Microsoft, and Airbus have bolstered the company’s technical and manufacturing capabilities. With regulatory approval pending, Vertical Aerospace aims to launch commercial operations by 2026, potentially leading a new era of urban air mobility.
