Abu Dhabi Ports Appoints Contractors for Luanda Terminal Development

Abu Dhabi Ports has announced the appointment of “MAR for Civil Construction and Public Works” (LDA) to design and construct the marine and superstructure infrastructure for the “Nautum Ports – Luanda Terminal,” located within Angola’s largest port. Additionally, the company has contracted “Dar Engineering Consultancy” to provide project management and construction supervision services.

The Luanda port handles approximately 76% of container and general cargo volumes in Angola, and serves as an entry point to landlocked neighboring countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia. Under a concession agreement signed with the Luanda Port Authority in April 2024, which spans 20 years, Abu Dhabi Ports will invest over $250 million in the terminal’s modernization project by 2026.

On January 30, 2025, Abu Dhabi Ports announced the commencement of its long-term operations to manage and develop the multipurpose terminal. This move aims to expand its presence in the Sub-Saharan Africa region and underscores the company’s commitment to enhancing the logistics infrastructure in the area.

The project will involve significant upgrades to support the handling of general cargo, containers, and roll-on/roll-off vessels. Once completed, the Luanda terminal will be the only facility in the port with a draft depth of 16 meters, allowing it to accommodate and handle large vessels, specifically the “Super Post Panamax” class.
