Dubai to Implement Advanced Traffic Signal System to Alleviate Congestion

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has begun the implementation of a next-generation traffic signal control system known as UTC-UX Fusion. This innovative system integrates artificial intelligence (AI), predictive analytics, and digital twin technologies, and is set to be deployed across all major intersections in Dubai. The project is expected to be completed by the first half of 2026

The RTA is dedicated to adopting cutting-edge smart technologies and global best practices in managing traffic intersections. These initiatives are part of Dubai’s broader strategy to become a smart and sustainable city. By enhancing road network efficiency and optimizing traffic movement, the RTA aims to strengthen Dubai’s reputation as a leader in intelligent mobility solutions.

Hussain Al Banna, CEO of the Traffic and Roads Agency at RTA, emphasized that this project is aligned with RTA’s vision of being a global leader in seamless and sustainable mobility. He noted that the upgraded system is projected to improve journey times and reduce traffic congestion at intersections by 10 percent to 20 percent. The goal is to enhance the travel experience for all road users, including motorists, public transport passengers, pedestrians, and cyclists, while also prioritizing emergency vehicles and public transport.

Al Banna further explained that the new traffic signal system features advanced capabilities, such as predictive traffic analysis, which will allow for dynamic optimization of signal timings based on anticipated traffic patterns. The integration of digital twin technology will enable simulations of signal adjustments, assessing their impact before actual implementation, and facilitating priority-based traffic management. The system will also utilize data from future road sensors to refine signal timings for greater efficiency.

The UTC-UX Fusion system is designed to adapt dynamically to real-time traffic changes. It will analyze data and make intelligent decisions to optimize signal timings, supporting future technologies like Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS/V2X). This will enhance communication between smart vehicles and traffic signals, ultimately improving traffic flow efficiency. Al Banna concluded that these advancements are crucial in reducing journey times, enhancing traffic fluidity, and improving the overall mobility experience across Dubai.
