The programme is open to eligible Thiqa members aged 18 and above who are clinically identified as overweight or obese. It offers a comprehensive and tailored solution that empowers individuals to effectively manage their weight. By providing structured guidance, personalized activity plans, and ongoing digital and clinical support, the initiative seeks to reduce the burden of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers while also enhancing overall quality of life.

Dr. Noura Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary of DoH, highlighted that the programme focuses on health rather than just weight. She stated, “Our focus is on health not just weight. This programme supports our vision for an active, health-conscious community, empowering individuals through personalized and science-driven solutions.”

Dr. Rashid Obaid Al Suwaidi, Director-General of ADPHC, agreed, emphasizing the programme’s potential to address a significant gap in healthcare delivery. He noted that even modest weight loss and increased physical activity can significantly lower the risk of chronic illness. “This programme bridges that gap and provides the tools people need to take control of their health,” he explained.

In an exclusive interview with Gulf News, Tony Terzis, Associate VP Medical at Lilly META, commended the DoH’s new Thiqa reimbursement policy for obesity medications, calling it a transformative development in the region’s healthcare landscape. He remarked, “This policy is a paradigm shift. It recognizes the chronic nature of obesity and replaces outdated, superficial approaches with long-term, medically sound strategies.”

Terzis further elaborated on the broader implications of this initiative, stating that the UAE is setting a powerful precedent by incorporating science-backed obesity treatments into its reimbursement framework. He emphasized that this approach affirms the clinical value and safety of innovative therapies while tackling the real-world challenges patients face, such as access and stigma.

According to Terzis, Lilly’s commitment aligns with this initiative, aiming to support sustainable healthcare transformation. He noted, “Lilly’s work echoes Abu Dhabi’s bold vision for a future-ready healthcare ecosystem. We are committed to local collaborations that bring evidence-based, patient-centric solutions to life.”

Terzis also underscored the significance of strategic partnerships in advancing health innovation. He asserted, “At Lilly, collaboration is not optional—it’s how we lead. Tackling obesity is a collective responsibility, and shared efforts are key to reducing the long-term burden of chronic diseases.”

Looking forward, Lilly sees substantial opportunities to strengthen its partnership with Abu Dhabi, recognizing the emirate as a growing global hub for healthcare transformation. Terzis stated that Abu Dhabi’s progressive infrastructure, policy agility, and commitment to innovation create an ideal platform for next-generation treatments. He added that Lilly is ready to invest further in clinical research, early disease detection initiatives, and data-driven policy collaborations.

Globally and regionally, Lilly is committed to reshaping healthcare systems to promote longer and healthier lives. Terzis emphasized that innovation encompasses more than just new treatments; it also includes early detection, equitable access, and systems focused on long-term well-being. He concluded, “Our goal is to ensure that scientific breakthroughs translate into tangible, real-world outcomes for the people who need them most.”
