On May 10, 2025, Sheikh Salem bin Abdulrahman Al Qasimi, the Chairman of the Sharjah Ruler’s Office, officially inaugurated the Burjeel Cancer Institute (BCI) located at Burjeel Specialty Hospital in Sharjah. This significant event was attended by Abdullah Sultan bin Khadem, the Executive Director of the Sharjah Charity International, along with senior leaders from Burjeel Holdings, marking a pivotal advancement in cancer care delivery.

As reported by MSN, Professor Humaid Al Shamsi, the CEO of Burjeel Cancer Institute and President of the Emirates Oncology Society, expressed gratitude to Sheikh Salem for inaugurating the institute. He highlighted that this facility symbolizes a major milestone in cancer care. During the event, Sheikh Salem was presented with the book “Healthcare in the United Arab Emirates” by Prof. Al Shamsi, and he was given a tour of the institute’s advanced facilities.
Prof. Humaid Al Shamsi emphasized the significance of the new oncology center, stating that it represents a crucial step in decentralizing cancer care and extending their patient-first model to the Northern Emirates. He noted that this is the first facility of its kind in the region to offer fully integrated surgical and medical oncology services. The institute aims to provide timely and advanced care, ensuring that every patient has access to the best treatment options close to home.
The new center is designed to deliver comprehensive surgical and medical oncology services under one roof, allowing patients in the Northern Emirates to receive state-of-the-art cancer diagnostics, treatment, and procedures without needing to travel. The facility is equipped with the latest diagnostic and treatment technologies and staffed by a multidisciplinary team of oncology specialists and allied health professionals.
Services offered at the Burjeel Cancer Institute include chemotherapy, immunotherapy, precision-targeted therapies, and complex surgical oncology procedures. Additionally, the facility features dedicated chemotherapy suites, enhancing patient comfort and privacy and providing a supportive environment throughout the treatment process.
John Sunil, Group CEO of Burjeel Holdings, stated that this new cancer center in Sharjah reflects their belief that every patient, regardless of their location, deserves timely access to the best possible care. He emphasized that by providing comprehensive oncology services in the Northern Emirates, they are reinforcing their commitment to healthcare excellence and community support through innovation and compassion.
The Sharjah facility enhances BCI’s existing network, which includes its flagship center at Burjeel Medical City in Abu Dhabi and a recently launched facility in Al Ain, solidifying its status as the largest cancer care network in the UAE. Furthermore, BCI is set to expand its reach by opening a center in Oman later this month, marking its first initiative outside the UAE.
