March marks Endometriosis Awareness Month, a time to highlight the struggles faced by millions of women who experience misdiagnosis and delays in treatment. Dr. Zahid Khan, a Consultant Gynaecologist and Endometriosis Surgeon at Danat Al Emarat Hospital, has dedicated his career to addressing the pain often overlooked in women. He is one of only four Master Surgeons in Minimally Invasive Gynaecological Surgery in the UAE, specializing in laparoscopic excision surgery, which is considered the gold standard for effectively removing endometriosis.

The hospital is recognized as one of only three Centres of Excellence in the UAE for comprehensive endometriosis care. This distinction means that it offers a collaborative approach, bringing together gynecologists, colorectal surgeons, and urologists to manage complex cases using innovative, minimally invasive techniques. These methods not only reduce bleeding and improve recovery times but also minimize tissue damage, significantly enhancing the quality of life for many patients, including those who travel internationally for such expert care.

Additionally, Danat Al Emarat Hospital has become the first facility in the Middle East to provide Ovarian Tissue Cryopreservation (OTC), a groundbreaking technique that helps preserve fertility and delays menopause. Dr. Khan explains that OTC allows for the freezing of ovarian tissue which can be reimplanted later, restoring hormone production and reproductive functionality. This procedure is integrated into laparoscopic surgeries for conditions like endometriosis and can delay menopause by up to 10 years, thus lowering risks associated with osteoporosis, heart disease, and cognitive decline.

Furthermore, OTC is a valuable option for young girls and women undergoing fertility-compromising treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy, in partnership with ProFaM. This ensures that they have the opportunity to protect their reproductive health.

The hospital also emphasizes advancements in treatments for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and menopause. With the introduction of incretin-based therapies and safer hormone replacement therapies (HRT), women now have improved options for managing these conditions. Dr. Khan asserts that menopause does not have to lead to suffering and emphasizes that modern treatments can help women manage their symptoms more effectively.

Preventive healthcare is a key focus at Danat Al Emarat, with initiatives designed to ensure early detection and promote long-term wellness. Women in their 20s and 30s are encouraged to undergo Pap smears, HPV testing, and metabolic screenings for early signs of PCOS and insulin resistance. For women considering future fertility or looking to prevent menopause, consultations on Ovarian Tissue Cryopreservation (OTC) before the age of 35 can be crucial for maintaining reproductive health.

For women in their 40s and 50s, the hospital advises mammograms, cardiovascular assessments, and menopause evaluations to prepare for midlife changes. Those over 60 are encouraged to undergo bone density scans and colorectal cancer screenings. Dr. Khan highlights the importance of proactive healthcare, stating, “Women need to take charge of their health early. Proactive care leads to better outcomes.”

Beyond specialized gynecological services, Danat Al Emarat offers a comprehensive range of women’s health services, including high-risk pregnancy management, urogynecology, menopause care, and cosmetic gynecology. The hospital has also expanded its services to include Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology to address the reproductive health needs of young girls and teenagers.

With a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), along with a variety of pediatric subspecialties, Danat Al Emarat is dedicated to providing critical care for newborns and children. Annually, the hospital delivers over 5,500 babies, manages more than 220,000 patient encounters, and performs upwards of 4,200 surgeries, solidifying its reputation as a cornerstone of healthcare excellence.

Dr. Khan affirms that “Women deserve better,” emphasizing the hospital’s commitment to offering cutting-edge treatments and advocating for early intervention, empowering women to take control of their health and futures.
