The Emirates Health Services Corporation has started using artificial intelligence (AI) at medical examination centres to improve the detection of pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) as part of residency, visa, and identity procedures in the UAE. This initiative aims to streamline the medical fitness screening process, which is mandatory for obtaining residency visas.

By utilizing AI technology, the corporation can analyze chest X-ray images in under one minute. This rapid processing significantly reduces the time necessary for radiologists to finalize medical reports, speeding up the diagnosis and allowing for immediate treatment to help control disease spread and enhance treatment results.
Since the launch of AI-assisted TB screening in 2021, the accuracy of detection has notably increased. By 2024, the accuracy rate for TB detection has risen from 80% to 98%, showcasing significant advancements in AI-driven radiological analysis.
Dr. Abdullah Al Naqbi, Acting Executive Director of the Allied Health Services Sector at the Emirates Health Services Corporation, remarked that the incorporation of AI into medical screening centres is a pivotal step for improving diagnostic precision and efficiency. He noted that the technology has boosted detection accuracy to 98%, enabling prompt intervention and ensuring high standards of healthcare delivery.
Dr. Al Naqbi further stated that digital innovation in healthcare is essential for sustainability and aligns with the UAE’s vision for the future of the healthcare sector. The corporation is committed to providing a seamless and patient-centered healthcare experience, reflecting its dedication to adopting proactive solutions that enhance healthcare quality to global standards, while also positioning the UAE as a leader in digital health.
Medical fitness screening for residency visas continues to be a compulsory requirement for visa processing. This service allows expatriates to secure a medical fitness certificate that confirms the absence of infectious diseases, including pulmonary tuberculosis. The certificate is crucial for acquiring or renewing a residency visa and can be obtained through designated medical screening centres and certain public health facilities.
