Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly influencing various aspects of life, particularly in the realm of mental health. At the World Governments Summit in Dubai, Maqsoud Kruse, the Chairperson of the National Human Rights Institutions, highlighted that AI has the potential to democratise access to mental health resources. This evolving digital landscape raises important discussions about the effects of AI on mental well-being and human rights.

Kruse pointed out that there is a substantial amount of research examining the relationship between technology, including AI, and human behaviour. He expressed the need to remain vigilant about both the positive and negative impacts of technology on mental health. He emphasized the importance of promoting the beneficial aspects of AI while addressing its drawbacks.
Additionally, Kruse raised concerns regarding privacy within AI systems, warning about how AI gathers, stores, and uses user data. He called for embedding human values into all technological applications to ensure ethical standards are maintained. When discussing AI’s role in combating extremism, he noted that efforts must start with addressing fundamental ideas. He stated that AI can help identify counter-extremist ideas, which can foster critical thinking and tolerance among individuals.
Kruse further asserted that AI could significantly enhance mental health services by providing 24/7 support and connecting individuals to suitable resources. However, he cautioned that AI should not replace human interaction in mental healthcare but rather complement it. In reflecting on the future of mental health in the UAE, he referenced his recent publication, “The Future of Mental Health Care in the UAE,” stressing the importance of human dignity and values in mental health services.
He concluded with a call for creativity in providing services to support mental well-being for everyone in need, marking AI as a powerful tool in amplifying positive messages, particularly as the UAE celebrates the Year of Community in 2025.
