The UAE is planning to phase out the physical Emirates ID card, moving towards a more advanced digital system that utilizes biometric technology for identity verification. This change will allow residents to use facial recognition and digital verification through their phones instead of presenting a physical ID for accessing various services.

The new system, led by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP), aims to be implemented within the next year. It promises to revolutionize processes such as hospital visits and hotel check-ins, making them more efficient and modern.

Currently, residents still need to present their original Emirates ID card for several essential tasks, including opening bank accounts and accessing healthcare services. The upgraded e-Emirates ID system is designed to eliminate this requirement.

The ICP is enhancing the use of digital Emirates IDs via the UAEPASS app, which is a government-supported platform that allows users to request digital versions of official documents. The plan includes making facial recognition and biometric authentication standard practice across various sectors, including banking, healthcare, telecoms, and hospitality.

Although the UAE has previously introduced facial recognition technology through the UAEPASS app in 2021 during GITEX, the ICP is now pushing for broader adoption across all industries. Abdul Rahman Al Owais, the Minister of State for FNC Affairs, stated that e-Emirates IDs are already being utilized for several services. The current focus is on accelerating their adoption and addressing any challenges that arise.

With the introduction of biometric data, privacy concerns are expected. The ICP reassured the public that it adheres to strict laws and data protection standards to safeguard users’ information. Although the transition from physical IDs to digital verification will take time, it is already in progress.
