UAE Launches $60 Million Initiative for Visually Impaired Students in Ethiopia

The United Arab Emirates has announced a significant $60 million (AED 220 million) initiative aimed at enhancing educational opportunities for visually impaired students across Ethiopia. This initiative is being implemented by the Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation in collaboration with the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, building on the success of the Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak School for the Blind, which was inaugurated in May 2024.

With approximately 1.2 million visually impaired individuals in Ethiopia, including 332,000 who are classified as blind, this initiative addresses a critical humanitarian need, particularly in rural areas where access to educational and healthcare services is limited. Furthermore, Ethiopia faces one of the highest global rates of trachoma, a preventable eye disease affecting underserved communities, which underscores the importance of this educational support.

The new schools will be established with the backing of the Ethiopian Ministry of Education and are designed to become centres of excellence. They will incorporate advanced assistive technologies, specialized curricula, and tailored vocational programs to equip visually impaired students with the skills necessary for higher education and integration into the workforce.

His Highness Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who serves as the Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Development and Fallen Heroes’ Affairs, emphasized the UAE’s commitment to supporting people of determination worldwide. He stated that the initiative aims to provide visually impaired students in Ethiopia with inspiring and inclusive learning environments tailored to their unique needs, allowing them to realize their full potential.

Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan Al Nahyan remarked that sustainable development and strategic partnerships are essential for driving meaningful change. He noted that this initiative reflects the UAE’s dedication to uplifting communities and expanding access to vital services, aligning with the vision of African nations to invest in education for future prosperity.

First Lady Zinash Tayachew expressed gratitude for the UAE’s ongoing partnership, highlighting the goal of ensuring that all citizens, regardless of their abilities, have access to quality education. She affirmed that their joint commitment will foster a more inclusive society where every student can thrive.

Mohamed Haji AlKhoori emphasized the fundamental right to education for all children, stating that every child deserves a supportive learning environment. He highlighted that strengthening educational systems lays a foundation for a more equitable future and reaffirmed the significance of global partnerships in promoting lasting impact through education.

The initiative will work in conjunction with the existing Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak School for the Blind, establishing a network of new schools across Ethiopia to enhance access to inclusive education for visually impaired children, ensuring they can contribute effectively to society.
