AI Enhancements in Weather Forecasting to Tackle Water Scarcity in UAE

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is poised to play a significant role in addressing water scarcity in the UAE by improving weather modification techniques. Experts at the 7th International Rain Enhancement Forum (IREF), which began in Abu Dhabi, emphasized the ability of AI to enhance predictions and minimize unintended consequences associated with weather interventions. The forum highlighted the potential of AI to bolster climate adaptation strategies and support various weather modification initiatives.

AI models, especially deep learning networks, can process extensive meteorological data to deliver accurate weather forecasts. These forecasts are crucial for identifying conditions suitable for weather modification, such as cloud seeding. Moreover, AI helps track the movement and intensity of weather systems, which is essential for determining when and where interventions should occur.

Hasan Al Hosani, the managing director of Bayanat, Space42, remarked that the approach to environmental management is evolving from reactive to proactive. He noted that understanding the environment involves monitoring factors like water temperature and the migration patterns of species, such as albatrosses, which travel across continents. Al Hosani pointed out that changes in water temperature can indicate shifts in marine life distribution, and while bird migration may not seem directly related to climate change, it reveals a broader picture when analyzed alongside other environmental data. He emphasized that AI can significantly expedite the process of connecting these complex variables to derive actionable insights.

Bayanat also highlighted various research aspects under this initiative. For example, their marine research program, in collaboration with the Environmental Agency of Abu Dhabi, studies the impact of water temperature changes on marine life. Additionally, their partnership with OceanX involves research on microplastics, examining their prevalence and evolution in different ocean regions. While these subjects may not directly link to climate change, they undoubtedly influence it. AI’s transformative power lies in its ability to create a network of insights that enhances understanding and uncovers connections that traditional data analysis might overlook.

In cloud seeding operations, the brief lifespan of clouds necessitates rapid decision-making. AI can assist forecasters in identifying specific parameters and determining optimal locations within clouds for seeding. Currently, these processes are performed manually, but AI allows operators to analyze critical cloud features and make better-informed decisions, guided by AI recommendations on where to concentrate their efforts.

Dr. Abdulla Al Mandous, Director General of the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) and President of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), stated that AI is being utilized for modeling and forecasting seedable clouds. He mentioned that while drones are being tested for this purpose, they are not yet operational. According to Dr. Al Mandous, AI is highly effective for cloud seeding as it optimizes operations, maximizes the potential of each cloud, and accurately identifies the best locations for seeding activities.
