Dubai’s commitment to transforming waste into renewable energy was highlighted during a recent visit by Eng. Marwan bin Ghalita, Director General of Dubai Municipality, to Tadweer, a prominent waste management facility in the emirate. The visit focused on Tadweer’s pilot biogas facility, which illustrates how organic waste can be converted into clean, renewable energy, contributing significantly to reducing landfill use and supporting the UAE’s clean energy and circular economy objectives.

During the tour, Eng. Marwan, alongside senior officials from Dubai Municipality, received a briefing on the biogas system designed to harness the energy potential of food and organic waste. This initiative addresses a significant environmental challenge by transforming waste into a source of power. Eng. Marwan bin Ghalita stated, “The biogas project is a model of how innovation and environmental responsibility can work hand-in-hand.” He emphasized Dubai’s leadership in integrated waste management, leveraging advanced technology and strategic partnerships to create a future centered on sustainability and energy resilience.
Eng. Faris Saeed, CEO of Tadweer and Chairman of SEE Holding, hosted the visit and provided insights into Tadweer’s extensive waste processing operations. Since its establishment, the facility has successfully diverted over 5.2 million tons of municipal solid waste from landfills and produced more than 90 000 tons of organic compost for agricultural and landscaping purposes. The biogas plant, currently in its pilot phase, serves as a practical demonstration of how local waste can be converted into local energy, advancing Dubai’s Integrated Waste Management Strategy 2021—2041 and aligning with the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050.
Faris Saeed remarked, “Our biogas initiative proves that waste is not an end, but a beginning.” He added that through ongoing collaboration with Dubai Municipality, they are redefining urban waste management by turning organic matter into energy and transforming innovation into action.
In addition to its operational success, Tadweer prioritizes sustainability education, having delivered over 1 200 awareness programs to more than 30 000 students across the UAE. This initiative aims to instill circular economy values in future generations, supporting Dubai’s vision of achieving a zero-waste future. Projects like Tadweer’s waste-to-energy initiative play a vital role in establishing the emirate as a global leader in sustainable urban development and energy-efficient waste solutions.
