Abu Dhabi Plans to Install 1 000 New EV Charging Stations Across 400 Locations

The Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility), part of the Department of Municipalities and Transport, has announced a significant investment in electric vehicle infrastructure. The initiative involves appointing several operators to manage the EV charging stations through public-private partnership (PPP) contracts, which will cover the supply, installation, operation, and maintenance of these charging stations throughout Abu Dhabi.

This project is designed to support the transition to clean mobility and reinforces Abu Dhabi’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. The establishment of this extensive network is a critical step towards creating an advanced public charging infrastructure that meets the sustainable transport needs of the emirate. It also aims to promote the shift towards more efficient and environmentally friendly mobility solutions, enhancing the quality of life in Abu Dhabi.

The first phase of the project involves the installation of 1 000 new charging stations at 400 strategic locations across Abu Dhabi Island, the Al Ain region, and the Al Dhafra region. The plan includes a gradual increase in the number of stations annually based on demand. The new stations will operate under the unified brand name Charge AD, with standardized charging tariffs set at AED0.70 per kilowatt-hour for AC chargers and AED1.20 per kilowatt-hour for fast DC chargers.

In addition to public charging stations, the network will expand through collaborations with strategic partners to provide charging points in key locations like hotels and shopping centers, ensuring extensive coverage for electric vehicle users.

Dr. Abdulla Hamed Al Ghfeli, acting director general of the Integrated Transport Centre, highlighted that this strategic investment demonstrates Abu Dhabi’s commitment to sustainable mobility and supports the transition to smart, eco-friendly transport solutions. He stated that such an investment reflects their role as a catalyst for technological transformation in the transport sector, enhancing infrastructure through innovation and artificial intelligence.

To support the nation’s vision of achieving carbon neutrality, Abu Dhabi Mobility aims for 50 percent of vehicles on the emirate’s roads to be electric by 2040.
