The Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority (GCCIA), alongside the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), has initiated a significant workshop in Kuwait titled “Empowering the Future Grid: Exploring the Application of Generative AI in GCC Power Systems.” The event, which began on April 29, 2025, and will continue until April 30, is taking place at the Hilton Garden Inn and brings together leaders from the Gulf electricity sector and major technology firms such as Microsoft, Oracle, and NVIDIA.

As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to reshape the global energy landscape, the Gulf region is poised to lead this transformation. Recent studies suggest that AI could contribute an impressive $150 billion to the GCC’s economy, which accounts for about 9% of the region’s total GDP. Utility companies in the Gulf are among the most prepared for AI adoption globally, driven by strategic investments and a forward-thinking vision.
GCCIA’s workshop aims to foster integration, collaboration, and competitiveness within Gulf electricity systems. The authority firmly believes that Generative AI will play a crucial role in enhancing the operational resilience, sustainability, and global competitiveness of the region’s power networks. This not only aids internal connectivity among GCC countries but also aligns with future plans for interconnection with Europe and other international energy markets.
Eng. Ahmed Al Ebrahim, CEO of GCCIA, emphasized the importance of innovation in the energy sector. He remarked, “Today, we gather at the intersection of innovation and necessity. As the energy landscape evolves into a cleaner yet complex future, so too must our approaches and technologies for our future grids.” He also highlighted the launch of the Open Power AI Consortium by EPRI, which aims to leverage AI for transforming the energy sector through collaboration between technology leaders and energy partners.
The workshop’s agenda, crafted with significant input from GCCIA and regional utilities, features real-world case studies, best practices, and brainstorming sessions led by experts in the Gulf power sector. Participants are exchanging insights on how AI is currently enhancing their operations and exploring strategies to further scale its adoption across the region.
Throughout the workshop, discussions will also address lessons learned from global AI deployment challenges, where only 35% of organizations felt confident that their infrastructure could support AI solutions. This reflection aims to guide Gulf utilities in developing smarter, future-proof AI systems that create real value.
Over the two days, sessions will delve into how Generative AI is revolutionizing grid planning, operations, and asset management. Leaders from Microsoft will share insights on utilizing the Copilot platform for energy operations, while Oracle and NVIDIA will showcase advanced AI applications tailored for the power sector. EPRI experts will provide technical perspectives, working alongside Gulf utilities to formulate actionable roadmaps for effective AI integration.
By championing these initiatives, GCCIA is positioning Gulf utilities as global frontrunners in smart, sustainable, and integrated electricity systems, ensuring that the region remains competitive and resilient in the energy market for many years to come.
