WEG, a prominent manufacturer of electric motors, variable frequency drives, and gearboxes, will play a crucial role in the development of a new oil pipeline for the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC). The integrated drive package from WEG will include flameproof electric motors, variable speed drives (VSDs), and transformers, which are designed to enhance the efficiency, reliability, and safety of the horizontal centrifugal pumps that are essential to the pipeline’s operation.

The pipeline, spanning over 300 kilometers (186 miles), is set to transport approximately 1.5 million barrels of crude oil daily. This significant infrastructure project, valued at $3 billion, is aimed at bolstering the UAE’s energy exports and security by facilitating the movement of crude oil from Jebel Dhanna in Abu Dhabi to the Fujairah oil terminal located on the eastern coast.
As part of this initiative, WEG will supply 20 medium-voltage flameproof motors that will drive multiple horizontal centrifugal pumps used in heavy-duty industrial applications. Among these motors are nine W22Xdb units rated at 3.3kV and 50Hz, with power ratings ranging from 850kW to 990kW, as well as eleven 900-frame M-Line motors rated at 6.6 kV, delivering power between 6,710kW and 6,980kW. These motors are specifically designed to endure the extreme heat conditions of the Arabian desert, capable of withstanding temperatures up to 55°C and are certified IP55 for dust and water resistance.
The W22Xdb flameproof motors are engineered to maximize safety and efficiency in hazardous environments, adhering to global standards such as ATEX and IECEx. They feature robust construction with cast iron or welded steel frames, advanced cooling options, and monitoring systems for thermal and vibration stability, which ensures optimal reliability. These motors also offer high energy efficiency and customizable configurations, making them suitable for flexible installations required for oil pipelines.
Additionally, the WEG M-Line consists of versatile three-phase induction motors tailored for demanding industrial applications. These motors are designed to minimize losses and enhance efficiency, thanks to their superior structural integrity that reduces vibration levels, thus improving durability and reliability in challenging environments.
To further enhance energy efficiency and safety, WEG’s solution incorporates integrated arc-resistant VSDs. These drives can absorb explosions from sudden electric arcs, safeguarding operators and maintenance personnel on-site. The system features a touchscreen human-machine interface (HMI) that facilitates easy programming and access to critical parameters, thus improving user experience while minimizing errors and downtime.
Kiran Kumar, HVS Development Sales Manager for HVS Motors & Drives, stated, “The fact the OEM supplying the centrifugal pumps for this critical pipeline project turned to us is a testament to WEG’s reputation for highly reliable customised drive solutions designed to minimise downtime and costs.” He added that their integrated solution team collaborated closely with all stakeholders to meet the stringent requirements of the project, which included flame and arc resistance. WEG secured this significant $22 million project by promptly designing an integrated drive package tailored to the needs of the pipeline.
The delivery of the drive packages by WEG is expected by September 2025.
