In April 2025, the Dubai energy and Water Authority (DEWA) will begin sending energy out of the country from its new hydroelectric power plant in Hatta. This project comes after the facility passed its first operating tests, which began in January 2025.

The news was shared by Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, the Managing Director and CEO of DEWA, while he was visiting the plant on Sunday. The project will use the Hatta Dam’s stored water to make power, which will help Dubai reach its clean energy goals. The hydropower plant is made to last 80 years and can produce 250 megawatts of electricity. It can also store up to 1,500 megawatt hours of electricity.
Al Tayer wrote on X that this project is one of a kind because it is the first of its kind in the Arabian Gulf area. He said that Hatta will start sending clean energy to Dubai gradually in April. This is in line with His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s plans for the emirate’s long-term growth.
