The American University in Dubai (AUD) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine (Penn Medicine) to set up a new School of Medicine in Dubai. This partnership aims to enhance medical education in the UAE, with Penn Medicine, ranked third among U.S. research-focused medical schools, contributing its expertise.

The collaboration will develop a Doctor of Medicine program that aligns U.S. medical education standards with the region’s needs. This initiative is part of the UAE’s strategy to expand healthcare capacity and train future doctors to provide world-class healthcare. Graduates from the program are expected to become leaders in the medical field, both locally and globally.
According to Gulf Today, this new school will also serve as a hub for research and education, supporting Dubai’s vision to position itself as a leader in healthcare and a global destination for medical tourism. The initiative aligns with the UAE Centennial strategy, which prioritizes education in health sciences as a key component in building a better future by 2071.
The MoU signing took place at AUD, with the presence of HE Dr. Muhammad Al Mualla, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and Dr. Sameera Almulla, Acting Director of the Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA), alongside officials from both institutions.
Dr. Kyle Long, AUD’s President, noted that the partnership continues the university’s legacy of innovation in education over the past 30 years. He emphasized that the collaboration supports the UAE’s goal of excelling in health sciences education.
Dr. Glen Gaulton, Vice Dean at Penn Medicine, highlighted the significance of the initiative, stating that it combines Penn Medicine’s expertise in research and patient care with AUD’s commitment to societal advancement.
This new program will also work with leading hospitals in Dubai and across the UAE to improve healthcare outcomes, aligning with the National Policy for Promoting Healthy Lifestyles.
