New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) has secured a commitment of over US$1 million from the Laidlaw Foundation to create a pioneering partnership in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. This initiative will establish the Laidlaw Scholars Programme at NYUAD, which aims to develop the next generation of global leaders. The programme is set to launch with its inaugural cohort in spring 2026, providing selected undergraduates with a two-year immersive experience.

The Laidlaw Scholars Programme will feature a blend of leadership development, training, experiential research projects, and community-based work experience. This multifaceted approach is designed to empower students to make a meaningful impact in the real world. Participants will also become part of a global network of over 2,500 Laidlaw Scholars from prestigious institutions worldwide.
According to WAM, Susanna Kempe, CEO of the Laidlaw Foundation, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating that collaborating with NYU Abu Dhabi allows for an extension of the foundation’s geographical reach, cultural richness, and global impact. Meanwhile, Fabio Piano, Vice Chancellor of NYU Abu Dhabi, conveyed the institution’s honor in partnering with the Laidlaw Foundation, emphasizing their shared mission to foster a diverse and inclusive community of ethical leaders.
Piano further noted that this collaboration demonstrates a commitment to empowering young individuals from various backgrounds to work together in building a global society. He highlighted the importance of preparing these future leaders to lead with purpose and integrity. With this partnership, NYUAD becomes the first university in the MENA region to join the esteemed Laidlaw Scholars Network, which includes 20 leading universities across Europe, North America, and Asia. Notable members of this network consist of the University of Oxford, the London School of Economics, Imperial College, Columbia University, Cornell University, Brown University, and the University of Hong Kong, among others.
