Gwendal Poullennec, the international director of the Michelin Guide, noted that in recent years, inspectors have closely monitored the culinary developments within the kingdom. He expressed enthusiasm about the “wonderful spectrum” of offerings that this rapidly evolving country presents.

The guide’s independent inspectors have diligently explored various regions in Saudi Arabia to uncover the most exceptional dining venues. They have recognized the country’s “diverse and dynamic food culture” as a key aspect of their evaluations.

Mayada Badr, chief executive of the Saudi Culinary Arts Commission, emphasized the significance of this collaboration with the Michelin Guide. She stated that it represents an important milestone in highlighting Saudi Arabia’s unique and varied culinary scene, showcasing the creativity and excellence of local chefs and inviting the world to experience the distinct flavors the kingdom has to offer.

The Michelin Guide was first launched in 1900 by the French tire manufacturer Michelin, initially aimed at providing practical travel advice to motorists. By 1920, the guidebooks began to charge for listings of hotels in Paris and categorized restaurants.

The process for awarding Michelin stars is based solely on the quality of the food, adhering to the guide’s established criteria. Anonymous inspectors evaluate restaurants based on five key factors: the quality of ingredients, mastery of cooking techniques, harmony of flavors, the chef’s personality as expressed in the cuisine, and overall consistency over time and across the menu.

Restaurants can earn one Michelin star for “high-quality cooking that is worth a stop,” two stars for “excellent cooking that is worth a detour,” and three stars for “exceptional cuisine that is worth a special journey.”
