Located in the town of Diriyah near Riyadh, the museum was designed by the Italian architectural firm Schiattarella Associati. It stands out as one of only seven museums selected globally for the 2025 Prix Versailles award and is notably the sole representative from the region. Among the other renowned museums recognized are the Grand Palais in Paris, Kunstsilo in Kristiansand, Norway, and Bali’s Saka Museum.

The architecture of Diriyah Art Futures has garnered acclaim for its thoughtful integration with the surrounding landscape. It draws inspiration from traditional Najdi heritage while also embracing modern design sensibilities and a forward-thinking curatorial program. The museum is organized into a series of sculptural pavilions that include galleries, research labs, and an auditorium, complemented by a new media library and a bookstore.

These distinct spaces are interconnected by shaded passageways that reflect the historical patterns of desert settlements. The architects expressed their intent, stating, “We wanted the architecture to feel as though it emerged from the earth.” This design philosophy focuses on utilizing natural values to establish a contemporary language that resonates with the museum’s location.

This recognition marks a significant milestone for cultural architecture in Saudi Arabia. Established in 2015 with the backing of UNESCO, the Prix Versailles honors architectural projects that have a cultural, ecological, and social impact. In 2024, the award named Zayed International Airport as the world’s most beautiful airport.
