Abu Dhabi is set to revive the UAE’s rich maritime traditions with the launch of the Noukhthat Abu Dhabi programme on 30 June 2025. This initiative, supported by the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, aims to train over 200 young sailors in the art of dhow sailing and navigation during a two-month course.

The Noukhthat Abu Dhabi programme is designed to provide participants with a chance to engage deeply with the UAE’s maritime history while learning essential sailing skills. The Abu Dhabi Marine Sports Academy is responsible for organizing the training, which will take place at the Abu Dhabi Marine Sports Club. Young sailing enthusiasts will gain practical experience, moving beyond simple boat rides to mastering the fundamentals of dhow sailing.
Participants will learn to handle a 22-foot dhow and navigate the waters, preparing for actual sailing races. The programme also includes a provision for monitoring and identifying young talent, with specialized teams focusing on spotting future champions who could advance to the 43-foot and 60-foot dhow categories. This comprehensive training aims to cultivate the next generation of dhow captains, ensuring the legacy of UAE maritime traditions continues.
The initiative aligns with the UAE Year of Community, reflecting the country’s commitment to preserve and celebrate its heritage. It promises a blend of education and excitement, featuring weekly training sessions and competitive racing on the water. For those who have always been fascinated by the dhow races, Noukhthat Abu Dhabi presents a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience and elevate their sailing skills in the UAE’s maritime landscape.
