Mitsubishi Power, a division of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), has secured two significant supply orders for the Rumah-1 and Al-Nairyah-1 Independent Power Plant (IPP) projects in Saudi Arabia. These orders are in collaboration with Doosan Enerbility Company, under which Mitsubishi Power will provide six advanced M501JAC gas turbines, along with generators and auxiliary equipment. This initiative is expected to play a crucial role in supporting Saudi Arabia’s energy transition.

Khalid Salem, President of Middle East and North Africa (MENA) at Mitsubishi Power, expressed pride in partnering with the Saudi Electricity Company (SEC), ACWA Power, Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), and Doosan Enerbility on this landmark project. He highlighted that this collaboration emphasizes their commitment to enhancing Saudi Arabia’s energy infrastructure.
The Rumah-1 and Al-Nairyah-1 power plants, located in the central and eastern regions of Saudi Arabia, will be developed by a consortium that includes SEC, ACWA Power, and KEPCO. Khalid Salem noted that as the Kingdom strives to increase the share of renewable energy in its grid, these plants will be vital for ensuring grid stability and reliable power generation.
Salem further elaborated on the collaboration’s significance, stating that it not only reinforces their commitment to delivering innovative, hydrogen-ready solutions but also represents a substantial advancement towards achieving Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 and its broader goals for a sustainable, low-carbon energy future.
The combined output of these power plants will reach 3.6 gigawatts (GW), contributing nearly 2.5% to the national grid’s capacity. This project aligns with Saudi Arabia’s energy mix strategy, which aims for renewable energy and natural gas to each account for 50% of the Kingdom’s electricity generation by 2030. Additionally, these initiatives are integral to the Saudi Green Initiative, which targets net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2060 or sooner through a circular carbon economy approach.
Mitsubishi Power has a long-standing presence in Saudi Arabia, beginning its operations in the 1960s with its first supply of boilers to Saudi Arabian Oil Company (Aramco) in Abqaiq.
