This launch follows the arrival of China Eastern’s inaugural MU237 flight from Shanghai to Abu Dhabi on April 28, which was celebrated with a welcome ceremony at Zayed International Airport. The new service will initially operate with four weekly flights, with plans to increase to daily service starting September 12, 2025. This expansion aims to enhance connectivity between the UAE and China.
In addition to the joint venture launch, the airlines have signed a new agreement for their respective loyalty programs at the Arabian Travel Market on April 29. Beginning June 1, 2025, members of the Etihad Guest and Eastern Miles programs will be able to earn and redeem miles across both airlines’ global networks. This new feature will provide greater value and create seamless travel experiences for loyalty members.
The Etihad Airways – China Eastern Airlines joint venture, first announced in June 2024, is now operational. It offers enhanced connectivity and a more robust combined network, reflecting the enduring ties between the UAE and China. The initiative aims to provide expanded travel options and smoother experiences for passengers traveling between major Chinese cities such as Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Xi’an, and Kunming, as well as key cities in the UAE and the broader Middle East and Africa regions.
Arik De, Chief Revenue and Commercial Officer of Etihad Airways, emphasized that the official launch of this joint venture represents a significant step forward for both airlines. He noted that it not only expands choice and connectivity for guests but also lays the groundwork for a new era of cooperation and innovation between the UAE and China.
Wan Qingchao, Executive Vice President of China Eastern, remarked that the launch of the Shanghai-Abu Dhabi route and the joint business cooperation with Etihad Airways are vital accomplishments in promoting their shared vision under the Belt and Road Initiative. He highlighted that the modern Zayed International Airport will further improve transit capabilities and travel convenience for passengers.
This partnership marks the first joint venture between a Middle Eastern airline and a Chinese airline, setting a new precedent for future bilateral aviation agreements. Both airlines are committed to aligning further in areas such as codeshare flights, joint marketing initiatives, and enhancing customer experiences.
