The system was inaugurated by Prince Saud bin Mishaal, the Deputy Emir of the Mecca Region, representing a significant step towards automating the airport’s check-in and departure procedures. The introduction of these AI-powered e-gates aims to enhance airport efficiency, improve security screenings, and reduce wait times for passengers.

Strategically placed across Terminal 1 and the Executive Office facilities, each e-gate is capable of processing 2,500 passengers per day, providing a streamlined and paperless travel experience. The new system utilizes biometric verification and facial recognition technology, allowing travelers to pass through security checkpoints without manual document checks, thereby significantly speeding up the process.

This initiative follows the successful implementation of e-gates at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh and Neom Bay Airport, making Jeddah the third major airport in Saudi Arabia to adopt this innovative technology. In 2024, King Abdulaziz International Airport welcomed 49.1 million passengers through 278 000 flights, underscoring its importance as a major hub for pilgrims, business travelers, and tourists.
