Industry analyst Richard Aboulafia has raised concerns regarding the timeline for the introduction of electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing vehicles (eVTOLs) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). According to Aviation Week, in a commentary published in September 2024, he questioned, “When will an eVTOL, or anything AAM [advanced air mobility], actually enter service? Great question! The answer always seems to be, ‘Two years from now, in Dubai!’”

Aboulafia’s remarks suggest that the much-anticipated air taxi service in the UAE could be delayed until 2027. This projection highlights ongoing uncertainties in the development and deployment of advanced air mobility technologies, which are still in the experimental stages. The UAE has been recognized for its ambitious plans in this sector, yet it faces significant challenges in bringing these innovations to market.
The analyst’s comments reflect a broader skepticism within the aerospace industry regarding the viability of air taxi services. As cities worldwide explore the potential of eVTOLs, the timeline for operational services remains uncertain, with developments often taking longer than initially expected.
