Dubai Expo City has officially opened the world’s first Centre for Species Survival, dedicated to the conservation of fungi. Located at Terra, the sustainability pavilion, this facility underscores the UAE’s commitment to sustainability and biodiversity.

Fungi play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance, supporting plant health, nutrient cycling, and carbon storage. However, they have often been overlooked in conservation efforts. The new centre in Dubai aims to focus on fungi native to the region while prioritizing the creation of a global fungi-focused assessment list. This effort will include a detailed scientific evaluation of the extinction risk for various fungi species.
The Centre for Species Survival will collaborate closely with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to advance its objectives. This partnership highlights the importance of fungi in preserving biodiversity and promoting sustainability.
Visitors can learn more about the significance of fungi by attending the upcoming Enchanted Forest Festival. Scheduled for June 28 and 29, tickets are available on the official website. While children under 12 can enter for free, adult tickets are priced at AED50.
The festival promises an indoor adventure filled with family-friendly activities, including storytelling sessions, children’s workshops, guided tours under the forest canopy, photo opportunities, and face painting featuring a mushroom mascot. This engaging event is designed to foster curiosity and educate attendees about the vital role fungi play in our ecosystem.
