PureHealth Eyes Second European Acquisition with Luz Saude

Abu Dhabi healthcare group PureHealth is pursuing its second consecutive acquisition of a leading European hospital operator, this time targeting Luz Saude, which is based in Portugal. Luz Saude operates a network of 20 hospitals across Portugal and Madeira. This potential deal would enable PureHealth to enhance its European presence following its recent acquisition of a majority stake in Hellenic Healthcare Group, which has facilities in Greece and Cyprus.

An analyst noted that if the Luz Saude deal goes through, it would align well with PureHealth’s ambitions for a significant global footprint. Luz Saude is currently owned by Fidelidade, which is part of China’s Fosun and Caixa Geral de Depositos. The possibility of this acquisition was initially reported by Bloomberg.

Industry insiders emphasize that PureHealth has a careful approach to valuations and the price it is willing to pay for acquisitions. The same analyst remarked that PureHealth has consistently demonstrated a disciplined approach, avoiding any rush into deals, whether in the UAE or abroad.

In the first quarter of 2025, PureHealth reported a revenue increase of 7.6%, reaching Dh6.58 billion. This growth can be attributed not only to its UAE assets but also to recent acquisitions in the US and UK, with a net profit of Dh505 million for the period.

While PureHealth has not provided any updates regarding the Luz Saude deal, analysts stress that the success of any potential acquisition hinges on obtaining a fair price. One analyst stated, “When a deal valuation was not seen as ‘fair’, PureHealth has walked away.” They added that while expansion remains a priority, PureHealth’s strategy focuses on ensuring the right returns for its shareholders. Without a fair valuation, the analyst is confident that PureHealth will not proceed with the acquisition.
