Sharjah Maritime Academy (SMA) is setting a new standard in higher education by embracing advanced technologies. It is the first maritime institution in the UAE to launch blockchain-based micro-credentials, forged through a strategic partnership with Educhain. This initiative is part of SMA’s broader efforts to transform maritime education and enhance how skills and knowledge are recognized in a rapidly changing environment.

In a significant shift towards modernization, SMA has automated 85% of its processes, creating an AI-powered smart campus that prioritizes student needs. This transformation is not merely cosmetic; it represents a systemic change that includes personalized learning experiences and real-time analytics. SMA is building the digital infrastructure essential for students to succeed in the future.
The introduction of blockchain badges marks a revolutionary step for SMA, enabling the issuance of tamper-proof, instantly verifiable, and globally shareable certificates, badges, and transcripts. This development positions SMA graduates as skills-first professionals, equipped for a technology-driven future.
Furthermore, SMA is actively shaping the conversation around educational technology in the region. Earlier this year, it hosted the Higher Ed AI & Digital Innovation Symposium, which brought together AI experts from various universities, including Zayed University and American University in Sharjah, to discuss topics such as digital ethics and cybersecurity.
In February, SMA also organized the International Maritime Education, Training & Research Conference, a two-day forum focused on smart ports, sustainability, Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS), and maritime safety. During this event, SMA faculty and students had the opportunity to present alongside international industry leaders.
“This is bigger than maritime,” said Chancellor Dr. Hashim Al Zaabi. “It’s about redefining education in a world where technology, automation, and sustainability shape every industry. We’re not catching up; we’re setting the pace.” With its digital-first systems and strategic partnerships, SMA is not merely anticipating the future of education but actively delivering it.
