Millennium Capital has announced the appointment of Emmanuel Clair as senior commodities portfolio manager, marking a significant development for the hedge fund as it broadens its reach beyond its limited presence in Jersey.
Clair brings a wealth of experience to the role, having spent a decade at Goldman Sachs where he was instrumental in energy trading, including serving as head of London energy trading. With a PhD in quantitative hydrology, Clair has also founded his own commodities management firm, Dolment Advisors, in recent years.
This strategic hire comes as Millennium considers expanding its office in Jersey, previously known as a lesser-known player in the commodities trading landscape. The firm is reportedly looking to offer alternatives to portfolio managers who may be hesitant to relocate to the UAE amid recent geopolitical tensions.
Interestingly, while Jersey offers a favorable business environment, the tax regime there contrasts sharply with the UAE. Investors and corporations in Dubai often enjoy no taxes at all, while in Jersey, a standard tax rate of 20% applies. Despite this, the cost of living in Jersey is notably higher, being approximately 34% more than in the UAE, which could impact the long-term decision-making of potential investors and firms considering a shift.
Millennium’s growing interest in Jersey highlights a broader trend among hedge fund managers looking to balance tax efficiency while ensuring stability in their operational bases.
