Bangladesh and UAE Near Completion of FTA Talks with South Korea

Bangladesh is reportedly making significant progress in its Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations with South Korea and the UAE, according to statements made by Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir on July 26, 2026. The minister emphasized that the concluding phase of discussions is approaching, which could pave the way for enhanced trade relations between these nations.

This FTA is anticipated to bolster economic activities by reducing tariffs and facilitating smoother trade routes. Such agreements are crucial for Bangladesh, which aims to diversify its market reach and tap into the advanced economies of East Asia and the Middle East. The region, particularly the UAE, represents a significant market for Bangladeshi goods ranging from textiles to pharmaceuticals.

The UAE has emerged as a pivotal player in global trade, serving as a strategic hub for logistics and commerce in the Gulf region. Its diverse economy offers vast opportunities for Bangladesh, especially as both countries seek to strengthen their economic ties amidst changing global trade dynamics. By finalizing this FTA, Bangladesh could enhance its export capacity, leading to increased foreign exchange earnings.

In comparison, other nations in the region, such as India and China, have already established strong trade relationships with the Gulf countries, benefiting from preferential trade terms. Bangladesh’s proactive approach in negotiating this agreement signals its intent to compete effectively in the global market, allowing it to attract foreign investment and market its products more competitively.

The implications of this FTA extend beyond just market access. By reducing trade barriers, it could lead to increased Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) from South Korea and the UAE into Bangladesh, particularly in sectors like textiles, technology, and infrastructure. Enhanced investment can spur job creation and economic development within Bangladesh, a goal that aligns with the country’s broader economic strategy.

As the negotiations near completion, the focus will now shift to finalizing the terms that will provide mutual benefits. Both parties are likely to consider aspects such as tariffs, import quotas, and regulations to ensure a level playing field. Looking forward, the successful conclusion of this FTA could set a precedent for future agreements and strengthen Bangladesh’s position within the intricate web of international trade.
