UAE Implements Midday Break for Outdoor Workers Starting Today

The UAE’s midday break for outdoor workers has officially started, running from June 15 to September 15. This initiative prohibits work under direct sunlight and in open-air spaces between 12:30 PM and 3 PM, providing crucial relief from the intense summer heat.

This annual program, overseen by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, was first introduced in 2004. It aims to protect employees from the dangers of working in high temperatures. Companies face fines of Dh5 000 for each violation of the midday ban, which can accumulate to a maximum of Dh50 000 for multiple infractions.

These safety measures are especially pertinent this year, as the UAE has experienced record-breaking temperatures. April and May were reported as the hottest on record. According to the ministry, the midday break is in its 21st consecutive year and reflects the UAE’s commitment to creating a safe working environment that adheres to international health and safety standards.

The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation will conduct inspections across the nation in the coming months to ensure compliance with the midday break regulations. Last year, inspectors uncovered 51 violations during 134 000 inspections, a decrease from 96 violations the previous year.
