NYU Abu Dhabi Researchers Create Fast Diagnostic Tool for Infectious Diseases

Researchers at NYU Abu Dhabi have developed an innovative paper-based diagnostic device capable of detecting COVID-19 and other infectious diseases in under 10 minutes. This breakthrough technology does not require sophisticated laboratory equipment or trained personnel, making it accessible for on-site screening.

The device, known as the Radially Compartmentalized Paper Chip (RCP-Chip), was engineered by scientists at the Advanced Microfluidics and Microdevices Laboratory (AMMLab). It provides a fast, affordable, and portable solution for detecting even minute traces of viral genetic material using just a droplet of fluid, which causes a visible color change.

The RCP-Chip operates without the need for electricity or special tools, requiring only a mild heat source at around 65°C, comparable to warm water. The research detailing the development and validation of the RCP-Chip is published in the journal Advanced Sensor Research. This study emphasizes the chip’s role as a rapid, multiplexed diagnostic platform for infectious diseases, particularly in low-resource settings.

Mohammad A. Qasaimeh, an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Bioengineering at NYUAD and the senior author of the study, stated that the RCP-Chip is designed for real-world impact. He noted that it can be reconfigured to detect other infectious diseases, enhancing its utility as a global health tool.

Pavithra Sukumar, a Research Assistant at NYUAD and co-first author of the study, highlighted the significance of the device. She mentioned that it is a fast, affordable, lab-free test capable of detecting multiple gene targets in under 10 minutes. Sukumar emphasized its potential to improve outbreak response by facilitating quicker isolation, treatment, and control measures.
