Drones will be employed to spray the facades of public transport stations, significantly reducing risks associated with working at heights or in areas that are hard to reach. The technology will enable a smaller cleaning team of eight personnel to maintain each station, compared to the current requirement of up to 15 workers.

The RTA is collaborating with Dubai Metro operator Keolis MHI to assess the potential benefits of drone-assisted cleaning. Initial findings indicate that while drones offer advantages, traditional cleaning methods may still provide greater flexibility in certain situations. Additionally, drone-assisted cleaning has been shown to consume less water per station and minimizes unnecessary exposure of staff to high-risk areas.

Mohammed Al Ameeri, Director of Maintenance at RTA’s Rail Agency, stated that the trial is expected to lessen the environmental impact of cleaning efforts. He emphasized that the initiative reflects RTA’s dedication to innovative technologies that improve safety, resource optimization, and align with Dubai’s sustainability goals.

Al Ameeri noted, “This pilot initiative reflects RTA’s commitment to adopting innovative technologies that enhance safety, optimise resources, and support Dubai’s sustainability goals.” The trial will integrate both drone-based and traditional cleaning methods to maintain the cleanliness of station facades effectively.
