Microsoft’s Rima Semaan Discusses Innovations in Cybersecurity for the UAE

As cyber threats become increasingly sophisticated, Microsoft is at the forefront of developing AI-driven solutions that aim to detect, prevent, and neutralize attacks before they escalate. During GISEC 2025, the leading cybersecurity event in the region, Microsoft UAE introduced several cutting-edge innovations, including an AI-powered phishing detection and triage agent. This marks a significant shift toward proactive security measures.

Rima Semaan, Data & AI lead at Microsoft UAE, highlighted how intelligent agents and large-scale training initiatives are transforming the cybersecurity landscape. She stated that Microsoft is committed to shaping a safer digital future for the region through real-time alerts, identity protection, and an ambitious goal of training one million people in AI and security by 2027.

At GISEC, Microsoft showcased its AI-powered phishing detection and triage agent, which addresses one of the most prevalent attack vectors in cybersecurity. Semaan noted that last year, Microsoft identified nearly 30 billion phishing attempts worldwide. The new agent aims to empower security teams by automating the identification and triage of phishing attacks in real-time, allowing organizations to focus on strategic cybersecurity tasks rather than manual processes.

Emerging security trends this year are largely driven by AI and automation. Semaan identified three critical areas for focus: phishing and identity protection, data security automation, and an AI-driven cybersecurity strategy. She pointed out that the UAE Cybersecurity Council reports approximately 200 000 cyberattacks occur daily, particularly affecting sectors such as government, energy, and critical infrastructure. This alarming statistic emphasizes the necessity for organizations to strengthen their AI security strategies.

To combat the growing threat landscape, Semaan stressed the importance of adopting a comprehensive cybersecurity approach. She pointed out that each cyberattack in the region costs around $8 million, which is significantly higher than the global average of $4.45 million. Organizations should concentrate on three key areas: enhancing their cybersecurity strategy through a zero-trust model, investing in AI and automation, and ensuring responsible governance of AI systems.

Looking ahead, Semaan mentioned that Microsoft plans to roll out several innovations in cybersecurity within the next 12 to 18 months. This includes advanced AI-powered agents designed to improve threat detection and response. A noteworthy example is the Threat Intelligence Briefing Agent integrated into Microsoft Security Copilot, which provides daily updates on organizational security status.

As the cybersecurity and AI industry expands in the region, Semaan noted that 98 percent of organizations have already integrated these technologies into their business strategies. This growth reflects the increasing demand for advanced cybersecurity solutions to tackle evolving threats.

Microsoft’s future plans involve driving innovation in security solutions and launching the Microsoft Security Academy alongside the AI Skilling Academy. These initiatives aim to equip individuals with the necessary knowledge and tools to defend against cyber threats, part of a broader commitment to skill one million people in AI and cybersecurity by 2027.
