AMEA Power to Develop 1,500MWh Battery Energy Storage Systems in Egypt

AMEA Power has signed Capacity Purchase Agreements (CPAs) with the Egyptian government to develop the first standalone battery energy storage stations in Egypt. The projects will have a total capacity of 1,500MWh, which includes a 500MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Zafarana and a 1,000MWh BESS project in Benban. These initiatives are expected to enhance grid stability and allow for greater integration of renewable energy sources into the national energy mix

The agreements were formalized by Eng. Mona Rizk, Chairperson of the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC), and Aqueel Bohra, Chief Investment Officer at AMEA Power. Key figures present included Dr. Mahmoud Esmat, Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, as well as Eng. Hamida El-Sanea, General Manager for Renewable Energy Private Sector at the EETC, and Ahmed Hafez, Manager for Business Development at AMEA Power.

These projects are seen as vital steps in Egypt’s transition to clean energy, as they will improve grid reliability and facilitate the incorporation of more renewable energy into the energy framework of the country. Hussain Al Nowais, Chairman of AMEA Power, emphasized that the agreement represents a transformative moment for Egypt’s sustainable energy future. He noted that the deployment of advanced battery storage solutions will not only enhance the energy infrastructure but also contribute to a more resilient and decarbonized power sector.

He added that AMEA Power is dedicated to accelerating Egypt’s clean energy goals through innovative, large-scale renewable projects that promote economic growth, create jobs, and offer lasting environmental benefits. The company has invested over $3 billion in Egypt’s renewable energy sector, which includes solar, wind, and battery storage projects, bringing its total capacity in the country to 2 500MW of wind and solar projects, as well as 2 400MWh of battery storage systems.
