Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, has announced plans to introduce direct flights between Abu Dhabi and Sochi, a city in Russia renowned as the “Gateway to the Black Sea.” The new route is set to commence operations on May 29, 2025, with flights scheduled three times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays.

The flight will cover a distance of 1,554 miles (2,486 km), enhancing accessibility to the Krasnodar Krai region, known for its coastal attractions along the Black Sea and the mountainous landscapes of the Caucasus. Sochi, which gained international recognition as the host city for the 2014 Winter Olympics, is expected to attract more tourists with this new service.
According to reports, tickets for the new service are already available for purchase, and the flights will be operated using Etihad’s Airbus A320 narrow-bodied aircraft. Each plane will feature a two-class configuration, accommodating a total of 158 passengers, including eight in business class and 150 in economy class.
Etihad representatives noted that this move aligns with the airline’s broader strategy to offer diverse travel experiences while expanding into new markets. They highlighted that Sochi, also referred to as the Russian Riviera, is anticipated to become a popular destination for tourists seeking a blend of natural beauty and cultural history.
The introduction of the Sochi route is part of a wider expansion strategy for Etihad. The airline is adding Sochi as its fourteenth new destination in 2024, reinforcing its commitment to enhancing global connectivity.
In addition to Sochi, Etihad has plans to launch flights to other international cities, including Atlanta, Hanoi, Hong Kong, and Taipei. The airline is also set to begin services to Prague and Warsaw in Europe.
Etihad is not only expanding in Europe and North America but also aims to strengthen its presence in North Africa, with confirmed routes to Algiers, Tunis, and Al Alamein for 2025. Southeast Asia will see increased connectivity as well, with new direct flights planned to tourist destinations like Chiang Mai and Krabi in Thailand, Medan in Indonesia, and Phnom Penh in Cambodia.
Furthermore, Etihad has announced direct flights to Nairobi, Kenya, to bolster its network in East Africa. The airline has also entered a codeshare agreement with Air Astana, Kazakhstan’s national airline, to improve connectivity between the Middle East and Central Asia.
The fleet is expected to grow, as Etihad currently operates a fleet of 104 aircraft and has 98 additional planes on order, including a mix of Airbus A321LRs, A350-1000s, Boeing 777-8s, 777-9s, and 787s. This expansion signifies the airline’s preparation to meet increasing passenger demand and extend its route network.
Industry analysts believe that the launch of flights to Sochi could significantly impact the global travel industry. As Russia becomes more appealing as a leisure and business destination, this initiative could lead to a surge in international visitors, particularly from the Gulf region.
Moreover, direct flights between Abu Dhabi and Sochi may foster greater economic collaboration between the UAE and Russia, with potential benefits for tourism, trade, and investment opportunities. For travelers, this new route offers an alternative European-style coastal destination at a more accessible cost compared to traditional Mediterranean resorts.
The decision to operate year-round flights to Sochi reflects Etihad’s commitment to global connectivity. By adding new destinations and increasing its fleet size, the airline is positioning itself as a significant competitor in the international aviation sector.
Increased air travel between the UAE and Russia is likely to boost the demand for hotels, resorts, and tourism services in both Abu Dhabi and Sochi, which could positively impact local economies and create more employment opportunities in sectors like hospitality, transportation, and retail.
Looking forward, speculation exists regarding whether other Gulf airlines might follow Etihad’s lead by introducing flights to less-explored Russian destinations. If successful, the Abu Dhabi-Sochi route may pave the way for enhanced connectivity between the Middle East and smaller Russian cities with tourism potential.
The announcement has been met with interest from industry professionals and travelers alike, as it is expected to enhance tourism in Russia and strengthen economic ties between Abu Dhabi and Sochi. With plans for further expansion, Etihad is set to continue shaping international travel trends in the coming years.
