The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is preparing to launch advanced artificial intelligence (AI) models inspired by China’s DeepSeek, according to Faisal Al Bannai, the UAE’s presidential advisor on advanced technologies.

The UAE has been actively investing in AI to diversify its economy away from oil reliance. Al Bannai said the performance of DeepSeek demonstrates the potential for smaller, agile players to make a significant impact in the field of AI, which is still in its early stages. He noted that the UAE is learning from such advancements and plans to develop its own innovative AI models.
The country has previously launched Falcon, a large language model introduced in 2023, and Jais, an Arabic-language AI chatbot. Both projects aim to position the UAE as a leader in AI innovation. The government has also pledged billions to expand its digital infrastructure, including building data centers in France and the US.
Al Bannai, who also serves as the Secretary General of the Advanced Technology Research Council, highlighted the UAE’s ability to attract top talent and make swift decisions as critical factors in its AI strategy. He emphasized the importance of practical regulations that encourage AI growth without stifling innovation, calling for balanced policies in the global AI race.
This announcement comes amid global discussions on AI regulation, with some nations advocating for open and ethical AI development while others warn against overregulation.
