The Dubai Police K9 Unit has successfully completed 2,800 missions in 2024, showcasing its vital role in search and rescue operations, security inspections, and community outreach activities. With a team of over 70 trained dogs and more than fifty specialized trainers, the unit has been instrumental in ensuring public safety in various local missions.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Salah Al Mazrouei, Director of the Dubai Police Security Inspection Department K9, the unit’s K9 teams are essential partners in maintaining community safety during critical events. Their swift responses in emergencies have proven crucial for locating missing persons and providing security.
The K9 Unit also plays a significant role in conducting security inspections at public events, such as New Year celebrations, to maintain a secure environment. The unit utilizes a diverse range of breeds, including Labrador Retrievers, Belgian Malinois, Cocker Spaniels, Dutch Shepherds, German Shepherds, and English Springer Spaniels, each selected for their unique skills in areas like explosives detection, drug detection, and search and rescue operations.
In addition to operational duties, community engagement is a key focus for the K9 department. In 2024, the unit conducted 1,158 activities in schools and government institutions to promote awareness of their work. Al Mazrouei noted that these initiatives included fulfilling community wishes and participating in high-profile events like Expo 2020, which help inform the public about the K9 teams’ capabilities and their critical security role.
The K9 department is also equipped with advanced technologies that enhance their operational effectiveness. Al Mazrouei explained that they have developed systems incorporating thermal sensors and tracking technologies to monitor the health and performance of the dogs, which increases the efficiency of the department’s operations.
Moreover, the K9 teams are strategically deployed throughout Dubai to ensure a strong security presence and rapid response capabilities in emergencies. Al Mazrouei emphasized that this readiness is essential for maintaining public safety.
The unit’s commitment extends beyond local missions, as they also participate in international efforts, providing training and humanitarian aid in countries like Morocco and Libya. Al Mazrouei highlighted their dedication to international collaboration, stating that their rapid response to calamities reflects this commitment.
As the K9 department continues to expand, there has been growing interest in joining the unit, driven by its positive community impact and reputation. Training programs for both dogs and trainers emphasize the specialized skills developed over the past seven years. Al Mazrouei noted that their rigorous training protocols have significantly improved operational capabilities.
The achievements of the K9 unit have gained recognition, with Al Mazrouei expressing pride in their designation as the best security inspection department at the national level. He stated that this honor is a testament to the hard work and dedication of their teams.
