Dubai Municipality has announced the awarding of contracts totaling AED1.439 billion for four major stormwater drainage projects. This initiative aligns with the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, aimed at developing strategic and future-ready infrastructure.

These projects are part of Dubai’s broader commitment to creating sustainable and climate-resilient infrastructure. They also support the emirate’s ambition to become one of the world’s leading cities in infrastructure readiness. The contracts are within the framework of the Tasreef project, Dubai’s largest unified stormwater collection system, which is also noted for its operational efficiency in the region.
The commissioned works will cover key areas including Nad Al Hamar, the vicinity of Dubai International Airport, Al Garhoud, Al Rashidiya, Al Quoz, Zabeel, Al Wasl, Jumeirah, and Al Badaa. More than 36 kilometers of new drainage lines will be constructed, connecting to the main Tasreef tunnel, which aims to link drainage systems throughout the emirate. This expansion will significantly increase the network’s total drainage capacity in the targeted areas, thereby reducing operating and maintenance costs while enhancing service standards for residents and businesses.
Eng. Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Acting Director General of Dubai Municipality, stated that these newly initiated projects mark a significant milestone in the Tasreef project’s implementation. The enhancements are designed to improve the drainage system’s capacity, increasing its discharge capability by 700% over the next 100 years, thereby reinforcing Dubai’s status as a resilient city with advanced infrastructure.
Eng. bin Ghalita emphasized that the Tasreef project is a transformative initiative by Dubai Municipality, aligning with the highest standards of urban planning. He noted that it is essential for integrated management of the stormwater and surface water drainage network. This project aims to provide sustainable and future-ready solutions, which support Dubai’s vision as a leading, more sustainable, attractive, and livable city.
Overall, the Tasreef project is estimated to cost AED30 billion and is recognized as the largest of its kind in Dubai. It is designed to be scalable over the next century, with a goal to reduce construction and maintenance costs of stormwater stations by 20%, while extending the lifespan of Dubai’s stormwater infrastructure.
