The Port of Luanda is vital for Angola, handling approximately 76% of the country’s container and general cargo. It serves as an essential maritime gateway for neighboring landlocked countries, including the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zambia. Under a 20-year concession agreement signed with the Luanda Port Authority in April 2024, AD Ports Group is set to invest USD 250 million through 2026 to modernize the terminal.

The modernization project will involve extensive upgrades, transforming the terminal into a state-of-the-art facility capable of handling general cargo, containers, and roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) operations. The terminal will feature a depth of 16 meters, making it the only facility in the Port of Luanda that can accommodate Super Post-Panamax vessels with a capacity of up to 14,000 TEUs (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units). With a total area of 192,000 square meters, the terminal will be optimized for high-density container handling and equipped with advanced technology and IT systems. The modernization works are expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2027.

Upon completion, the terminal’s container handling capacity will increase significantly, expanding from 25,000 TEUs to 350,000 TEUs, along with Ro-Ro volumes projected to exceed 40,000 vehicles. Mohamed Eidha Tannaf AlMenhali, Regional CEO of AD Ports Group, expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with Mar Construction Civil & Obras Publicas – LDA and Dar Al Handasah Consultants Shair & Partners. He highlighted that this modernization will not only enhance the terminal’s capacity and efficiency but will also support the economic growth of Angola and its neighboring countries, ensuring the port remains a critical gateway for global trade.
